05/02/2023 | Housing Affordability Crisis and Inequities of Land Use in Southern California | Many fast-growing metropolitan regions in the United States have a shortage of housing and face a housing affordability crisis. Researchers have argued that regulatory barriers contribute to housing shortages and recommended that cities change their land-use policies to facilitate multifamily and higher-density development to address the problem. This presentation will focus on cities in the five county Southern California region, which has a shortage of housing for all income groups and a severe shortage of low-income housing. This talk will show that more even distribution of multifamily residential land use is required to equitably address the region’s housing affordability crisis, which could be achieved if the multifamily residential land use within jurisdictions more closely approximated the metropolitan average. | Watch |
11/9/2022 | CCRE/UC Center Sacramento Speaker Series: California’s Housing Crisis: Policies for a More Affordable, Equitable, & Sustainable Housing Future |
California faces a housing crisis of extraordinary scale and complexity. High rents and home prices—coupled with the lingering impacts of the COVID pandemic—are contributing to housing insecurity, high rates of homelessness, and deepening racial inequality. The politics of housing in the state can also feel intractable: cities continue to rely on exclusionary zoning tactics to thwart new supply, while developers, labor unions, NIMBYs, YIMBYs, environmentalists, and tenant advocates all stake out conflicting positions of what is needed to increase affordability and sustainability. This presentation will review the origins of California’s housing crisis, its implications, and lift up the policies that will be needed to chart a course to improved affordability, greater household stability, increased racial equity, and reduced homelessness across the state.
10/19/2022 | CCRE/UC Center Sacramento Speaker Series: Protecting California Homes from Extreme Heat |

Actions discussed include habitability standards and building codes, funding for the installation and use of home cooling, as well as policy and programming gaps to protect the most heat-vulnerable populations.

CCRE Presents: Protecting Homes from Climate Change-Intensified Wildfires | California’s commitment to advancing ambitious climate goals cannot ignore the impact of wildfires on communities across the state and the need for protection, policies, and resiliency measures to mitigate the most damaging effects of climate change. As wildfires and heat waves become commonplace concerns in the state, it’s clear that California needs a comprehensive action plan to reduce wildfire risk, improve environmental conditions, adapt insurance needs, and accelerate action to combat climate change. Additionally, it’s important to consider how we can empower property owners, homeowners, local governments, and pertinent stakeholders to proactively reduce wildfire hazards to minimize the loss of property and life and be active participants in advancing effective solutions. Among the key approaches to wildfire resiliency and preparation is collaboration with the insurance industry to ensure protective policies are available and affordable for all Californians who are at risk of climate change-intensified wildfires. Join us for a wide-ranging discussion that will cover such topics, including climate change trends, efforts to build resiliency to protect communities, and the future of housing development in a wildfire-prone state. | Watch |
